Each June, cities across the United States observe Pride Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, honoring decades of advocacy, and reaffirming the values of dignity and inclusion. For LoRen Dental, located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Pride Month is more than a calendar observance. It is an opportunity to reflect on our role within a community we are deeply committed to serving.

A Short History of Pride Month

To fully appreciate the significance of Pride Month, it is important to understand its origins. On June 28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn—a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village—resisted a police raid, sparking several nights of protest that became known as the Stonewall uprising. pride marchThe event is widely regarded as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, drawing national attention and mobilizing activists across the country.1

One year after Stonewall, in June 1970, thousands of people marched in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago to mark the anniversary. These demonstrations, organized in part by pioneering activists such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, laid the foundation for the Pride parades and community gatherings that exist today.

Federal recognition followed decades later. In 1999, June was designated as “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.”2 The designation was expanded in 2009, proclaiming June as “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.”3

What Pride Month Looks Like Today

In 2026, Pride Month is observed in communities large and small with a wide range of events and initiatives, including:

In Raleigh, the celebration has grown substantially in recent years, reflecting the city’s expanding and increasingly diverse population.
