Root Canals
What To Expect
Typically, root canal treatment involves more than one visit as many steps are involved. Initially, treatment will involve:
X-Ray
X-rays to be taken to target the problem area or tooth that is affected
Numbing
Your tooth to be numbed in order to ensure that no pain is felt during the procedure.
Pulp Removal
The nerve or pulp of the tooth is removed from the pulp chamber and root canal. Each canal in the root is properly cleaned and shaped so it can be filled.
Application
A special medicine may be placed in the pulp chamber and root canal to help clear bacteria from the tooth.
Temporary Filling
A temporary filling is placed in the tooth in order to decrease risk of contamination of the root canals.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics may be given if there is infection beyond the end of the tooth roots. If medicine is prescribed, use it only as instructed.
Final Steps of Treatment
Your dentist will remove the temporary filling that was placed. Once the filling is removed, a new permanent filling will be put in and a crown may be placed to strengthen the tooth to ensure particles will not affect where the root canal took place.
